Colostomy Closure: DAY ONE

Posted by Amber On December - 20 - 2007

Day one of the colostomy closure surgery was interesting to say the least. We had all the excitement with the Water Main… and it was fixed!!!! By 3 pm we were ready to be admitted with water and everything. So…… we packed up all teh studio Christmas gifts, stopped at the PO and dropped them off, got a bite to eat and headed in. We arrived at the Outpatient admitting area and hung out there – getting paperwork done, talking with anesthesia, trying to get labs, IV, etc. Joe came by about 5 pm and chatted for a while about our surgical plan, IV plan, clean out plan. We goofed with him for a while and of course had lots of fun totally harassing him. It truly amazes me how we can have so much fun in the middle of such horrible things. Kyleigh was a riot as always. She was running around all over the place entertaining the nurses. The State Police Troopers were here giving out Christmas gifts and she put on a show for the whole lot of 75 of them! Dr. Cottrill got to see her. We haven’t seen her since the blue incident so it has been a while.

It took us nearly 6 hours to get into a room. It really was okay though. We waited patiently as they said there were getting us a PRIVATE room cleaned… so SURE THING… we are more than willing to wait! LOL We did the first stoma irrigation in the outpatient area and it went really well. After that irrigation we now REALIZE how teh SCREW in her bowel must have REALLY hurt during the irrigations. This time they were no big deal at all!

Finally after the long wait we head to a room and we make it to the DOOR. Someone stops us at the door and says that they changed our room plans and that we now will be in a SHARED room………………….. uummmmmm NO. Our nurse was very nice. She looked at us and said… “Don’t worry, THAT is not happening”. She turned the corner and I could hear her talking… she informed them that I had Joe’s personal cell phone number on my phone speed dial WITH an open invitation to use it. She said she HIGHLY suggested that they FIND a private room for us. She told them that she was SURE that they did NOT want me to have to call Dr. Iocono at 10:30 at night and tell him it took 6 hours and that we were in a shared room. Needless to say we got a private room. LOL

The stoma irrigations went well but as expected the 5 that were ordered were not enough to clean her out. Overall it was pretty ridiculous that we waited 6 hours to get a room but I guess the end justifies the means! LOL
