Urine Cultures came back…

Posted by Amber On July - 16 - 2008

Imagine that.. Ky has an infection. Among other things she is growing E-coli. GREAT. So we are on Keflex for 10 days. Dr. Alam I think honestly did not think that it would grow anything. I guess this means she is still in the business of surprising us.

I called Debbie today to schedule our 24 hour stay and I think they were really busy. So I will call back tomorrow. We are off to the pharmacy to pick up the Keflex.

    Ugh, so sorry Amber :(

    E. coli is actually a really common UTI bug. The most important thing is to find out the sensitivities- as in what are the bug is resistant to. That will tell you how bad the infection is.

Eithene has never had an E. coli infection, she normally grows out Klebsiella and Enterobacter cloacae (which commonly live in the GI tract, and are not quite as common UTI bugs). The strains that she’s usually infected with are resistant to almost all oral abx- meaning that to treat the infections when she’s really ill requires hospital admission and IV abx. The only oral abx that usually works is Cipro- which is a pretty dangerous abx. That’s what she’s on right now for this last UTI.

This type of situation that we are always in with Eithene is what you really want to avoid. I would get them to send you the full report of all the bugs that grew and their sensitivities. THat way you will know what she’s colonized with and can be really proactive when she gets sick- checking her urine and treating at the first signs of infection.

Keflex is an ok abx- but it won’t clear a really good infection, so I’d be watching to make sure things really get cleaned out.

I really hope you can get rid of the stasis- its just a recipe for trouble!

Question from the cathing newbie. My son’s urologist said that low level infections were common and should be treated with just additional liquid intake.

He stated that unless Ethan had a fever, he should not have antibiotics.

Does that sound right to you?
