Doesn’t everyone compound their own medications?

Posted by Amber On July - 20 - 2008

We were having a discussion at our Heart Center Board Meeting- about medication and getting prescriptions to cross the state lines. I just had to chuckle when someone looked at me like I was crazy when I said “Doesn’t everyone compound their own scripts?” I guess maybe those years in pharmacy school did come in handy! LOL Yes… we compound one of Ky’s meds here at our house. We have to because this compound is only good for 24 hours. I do think its funny what work goes into making this one medication – and the aftermath (read: mess) that it leaves behind. For some people I am sure it would seem really complicated but once again… for us… its just life.

These are the part of Kyleigh’s cathing medication. Most kids can just take this stuff orally (g-tube port) but nooooooo… not mine. The antispasmatic properties of the Ditropan have systemic effects which extend to her intestines and colon… which is no good. So here we are… compounding meds…. and thus my ODE to Compounding!

I just hope we never have to fly again. I am pretty sure blunt fill needles are on the list of no-no’s for planes! LOL

lol! I WISH we could compound more of our meds- they would last longer and be easier to get (read: fewer problems with the pharmacy), but sadly most times we have to get them pre-compounded.

We compounded Eithene’s IV abx for a long time when she had her PICC but don’t really do too much these days on a regular basis other than her probiotic, and one of her allergy meds (but those are just ‘baby’ compounding procedures- not the real deal like you do with the ditropan or we did with the abx)

And, NO, I don’t think getting through airport security with blunt needles would be very fun (or successful!)…. ;) But be sure to let us all know if you try… he he.
