The morning UTI update

Posted by Amber On August - 18 - 2008

As of 2 pm Kyleigh has been lifeless for nearly 4 hours. Other than fighting our poor Nurse Norma she has been good for nothing today. After talking with Dr. Kiessling this morning we took her back for yet another urine culture to see if this antibiotic is actually working to bring the number of bacteria down. I didn’t ask for the WHAT IF its not scenario and he didn’t offer. Its ok that way!

For just one minute I have to stop and give a rousing round of praise to another one of our AMAZING doctors. Dr. Stefan Kiessling is a Pediatric Nephrologist at the University of Kentucky. We have only recently started seeing Dr. Kiessling regularly and he has quickly won our affections. I know that my blog gets “permalinked” a lot and I hope that anyone who is doing research on Dr. Stefan Kiessling will find this post and continue reading. We are so truly grateful to have such a kind and compassionate doctor as Dr. Kiessling. His mild manner and general demeanor have become a great comfort to our family in the recent days. I cannot say enough good about him. He truly has been so involved in Kyleigh’s urological care and has picked up the ball and is running with it. After months of struggling to figure out what is going on inside Ky and traveling to Cincy multiple times I think (once again) we may have found just the person we need here at home. Granted Kyleigh will always need a Urologist. I am not saying that he is a replacement for that but he has been a great “go to guy” for us. The state of her Urological affairs are not good and show little hope of getting better anytime soon. It can be so frustrating and it is really nice to have a medical professional who tries to understand what you are going through as a parent and actually SEES that you are NOT being “difficult” you are just desperately fighting to help your child feel better!

So… today… my hat is off to you Dr. Kiessling, and to our wonderful Dr. Megan Poole… who is as always so wonderful to us. We thank you so much for caring for our daughter and for making every effort to insure that she has the best chance at being healthy. We appreciate you more than you will ever know!!! And Nurse Norma too!! We love you Norma!!!! (and apologize for the Kyleigh battering that you always take when we are trying to cath her in the office!!… sorry about that!)

So… as of now Ky is sleeping. Her fever is back and she was pretty much a limp noodle when I put her in bed. The urine is taken once again and now we wait for this culture to come back to decide where to go from here.

As hectic and crazy as our life is I truly am so thankful every single day for our wonderful medical team here in Lexington. We are always proud to tell people that our doctors, nurses and staff are some of the best… because they are. We appreciate them in ways they will never know. Hopefully someday we will find a way to say thank you to them all because our lives would be much different if it were not for the compassion and heroic efforts of our amazing docs!! It makes all the difference in the world.
