Ross and Diabetes

Posted by Amber On May - 1 - 2009

After several month of contemplating and carefully watching him, Ross is most definitely having blood sugar issues. I have been testing him with the free meter that I got at Wags and he is all over the place. So now we will begin this journey. He is NOT high in blood sugar AT ALL… if anything he is low. So… I am implementing dietary changes, effective IMMEDIATELY until we can get in to see the Endo.

Sigh… I know so many other people who deal with this also. It is a life change and it seems daunting with Kyleigh already being so high maintenance.

I am just holding onto hope that he will be easily manageable and a few changes in diet will make a big change in his whole being.

If any of you have diabetic child tips… PLEASE POST EM! This is a whole new “thing” for me and I need to do my research.

    Amber,
When I was younger I had something called pre-diabetes. If I did not change my diet I would become a diabetic. I can help you. I always had to carry the meter and a granola bar of sorts. I have stopped now because I am able to recognize my symptoms on my own, I can help.

Oh my gosh, Amber, I need your email address. My brother, 16 now, has diabetes. He has a pump and manages diabetes so well. You will get this under control. I can get you some information, as well as tell you about the diabetes walk at Keeneland that is coming up. Your family would loooove it. My email is jennie.liebman@gmail.com. Email me when you get a chance. I can even get you in touch with my mom, who probably has better “tips” than me. Praying for you all!

    Ugh!!!

How low is he getting? We only manage low blood sugars on Benj through continuous feeds. I have no thoughts on how to manage it in a normal child.

    Hugs to you!

    Hi Amber,

I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar due to an over production of insulin)when I was 8 years old. My case was pretty extreme. I went to the doctor because I was having chest pains and tunnel vision. They pinpointed it pretty fast and I took the all day glucose test (it was horrible, but over in 8 hours) My case was managed with diet only. In a few weeks of no sugar, higher protein and scaling back the carbs I was a new person. It was hard as a kid because I could never have birthday cake or ice cream or halloween candy but in the grand sceme of things it was not too bad. My diagnoses was 30 years ago so perhaps treatment is different today. If this is what Ross has, I bet that in a few months you will have hit your stride and it will not affect you day to day. I am sending my prayers your way!

    Amber,

Lilly (our 6 year old) was diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic last fall,BUT from what you’re saying, if his blood sugar is not high then I wonder if it’s something else?

I frequent a site http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com and there is some VERY knowledgeable people there that could probably help. You will want to test him in the morning (before he eats anything), and usually that’s a good indicator of how their body is dealing with their blood sugars. Then they’ll have you give him something sugary (orange juice/etc) and test again awhile after that.

I don’t know all the specifics, but if you don’t want to wait for the endo/doc to get back to you head over to that website and I know you can find some good info.

If it does end up being Type 1 Diabetes it will be a HUGE life change, but it’s manageable, and there is a ton of support/info available. My thoughts/prayers are with you guys!

Feel free to email me if you need anything (banks@cableone.net)
