Coupons 101 – Why do I do it?

Posted by Amber On May - 8 - 2009

At the request of many I am going to start a series of posts about coupons, how to use them, why you should love them and how to make them WORK for you!!!

WHY did I begin couponing? Other than being in HARD times financially I had a friend, Ali, who showed up on my doorstep one day (back in October… we all know that was a pretty crappy month for me!) with this LOAD of cleaners, detergent, razors and beauty products. I was astonished. Now I also happened to know that Ali has a beautiful little boy, Brody, who was born with fluid on his lungs. He is allergic to everything, literally, and struggles every day just to breathe. They have soaring medical costs and I was perplexed at how someone could be SO generous when they, themselves, were facing obstacles. I remember thinking that I needed to pay her for this gift because I did not want her to be put in a pinch but she smiled and said “most of it was free”. I thought she was just making me FEEL better. After spending more time with her I realized… she was NOT exaggerating! I asked her if she would teach me her “ways” and at first the coupons seemed daunting. I thought there is NO WAY I have time for this, after I spent 4 hours one Sunday clipping and sorting!

Since then I have normed into a routine that WORKS for me. Do I spend a LOT of time couponing? No more so than I would normally spend shopping… I just spend a LOT LESS money! Truly… if you have the “shopping” bug, this is a great way to curb that craving! Once I am done with my normal 5 or 6 stores I am exhausted and ready to NOT SHOP again for another week! So… it does MANY great things for me!

When I realized that because Ali saved so much money, she was able to bless me at a horrible time when I TRULY needed a blessing, I knew right then that I wanted to do the same!

So… THAT is WHY I coupon… now you just need to know the HOW!

I wish we had a CVS and a Publix here :( They have some rocking deals!

I have saved over $100 this month in groceries using the coupons from my sunday paper and the coupon clippers.com. I got Eggo Waffles, sour cream, rice and wet wipes for FREE yesterday (TRIPLE coupons-my 0.75 went to $2.25 at the expensive grocery store). I spend about 1 hour a week sorting/looking online and its been worth it :)

My husband wonders why I do it but a dollar saved is another dollar going towards Emma’s butt bill lol ;)

Can you believe our girls are going to be THREE this summer?
